Tools are objects used to manage and handle a garden. Three tools are required to manage a garden, and each tool serves a different purpose. There are also convenience tools in Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise. The shovel and watering can tools can be upgraded to add new abilities.
The shovel or spade is one of the most important tools. It can dig ponds and holes, whack things and fill stuff in. It has many upgrades which add new functions to the shovel. Leafos gives a shovel, and Jardiniero gives upgraded heads and handles to the shovel as your gardener level increases. Three upgrades to the shovel can be purchased from Ivor Bargain in Viva Piñata and Viva Piñata: Pocket Paradise, or from Costolot's Store in Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise as Ivor Bargain does not operate a shop in that game.
The watering can is also a very important tool. It has two modes. A short water or a long water. Without it plants would wither and eventually die. However, there are upgrades which can stop that. You can also overwater plants causing them to turn blue and drown, and continuing this will cause the plant to die as well. Leafos gives you the watering can, and upgraded watering cans can be brought at Costolot's Store, and the most advanced watering cans are purchased from Ivor Bargain in Viva Piñata and Viva Piñata: Pocket Paradise, or from Costolot's Store in Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise.
The Surface Packets are tools used in your garden to change the surface type of the garden's terrain. There are four types of surface packets for four surface types that can be placed in the garden, Grass, Long Grass, Sand, and Snow, with the last two being additions found in Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise. The Grass surface packet is given to you by Leafos in Viva Piñata, and the Long Grass Packet is purchased from Costolot in the games. In Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise, the sand and snow packets are obtained by capturing a piñata from the Dessert Desert and Piñarctic regions respectively and releasing the crate in the main garden.
The Seed Bag is a tool introduced in Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise used for easily planting plant seeds in your garden.
